I found this chart from the Knitting Daily magazine email. It is American jargon, but is a good guide if you need to guess what those bits lurking in the cupboard are!!

This is the guide I use for wpi
2ply (Lace) - 18+ wpi
4ply (Fingering/Sock) - 14wpi
5ply (Sport) - 12wpi
8ply (DK) - 11wpi
10ply (Worsted) - 9wpi
12ply (Aran) - 8wpi
Bulky - >7wpi
