Hello Fellow Knitters

My preference for knitting needles has always been bamboo.  I learnt how to knit on steel, but they made my wrists and fingers ache and made such a racket when I was knitting.

I discovered bamboo needles when I was living in London, and now I would never go back.  I tried wooden and love them too.  So light, warm and beautiful.

Must try and track down some bamboo circulars.

Thanks for listening

I will try some bamboo ones myself.

Cheers

For years my favourite needles were tortiseshell. They were pliable and soft to use, I really thought they were made of plastic and was horrified to learn they were real tortoise shell.
Now they are brittle and can not be used so I am using plastic------real plastic but I will look out for bamboo, never heard about them before.

Hi there, I too like bamboo needles but I only like short needles (10inch) and I have trouble finding them that short. Can anyone suggest an Aussie stockist of short bamboo needles?
thanks

Yup I love bamboo needles the best:

1. they're light
2. they're flexible but not soft
3. once you've finished with them they're biodegradeable !

I've just ordered the casein knitting needles from this website ... does anyone use them and how do they find them? I've heard they are good. I've always used the usual steel / aluminium ones so I don't know what the other types are like ... the bamboo sound good .. do they come in Australian metric sizes because someone once told me they are made in Japan and are a completely different sizing system.

I knit in the traditional Scottish way with the right needle in my armpit. I bought a set of bamboo needles but have found some split because I bend them!!!  cry  I am using the 3.75mm at present and used glue to stick down the splinter and it works, more or less  huh , but I am using a light acrylic yarn. I find the plastic needles bend too much and slow me down.  cry My next jumper will be either 5ply wool, or 8 ply wool, so a heavier knit. I thought that the bamboo would be better for my arthritis.  Any suggestions? I do love knitting with them.

Just a further comment. I glued the split in my 3.75' s Cheesy leaving the bend there and they have been OK. The only prob was the glue beyond the split on my fine fluffy yarn but being fine, the stitches croweded up well. I am now using them on 5ply wool and having no probs as I have been trying to pick off the glue Cheesy where possible.

Dear Mickijo,
I don't think there were any knitting needles made from tortoiseshell - as far as I have been able to find out, they were all plastic with a tortoiseshell pattern, so rest easy ! Cheesy
