Hi, I am knitting a Rowan jumper from mag no 37 called Humbug. It is just stocking st but with the following pattern on two rows to create slits in the front:
Row 5: K35, cast off 9st, K to end
Row 6: P35, turn and cast on 9st, turn and P to end.
My problem is I am getting a loose strand across the right hand corner. I know its something to do with the last cast on stitch before I turn to purl the rest of Row 6, because on the next row (knit row) when I come to knit this stitch my yarn tension pulls out and I can't get it back in (hard to explain!), and I figure this is what is creating the loose strand. I have read stuff about having the yarn in front for the last cast on stitch, but I can't seem to do this without creating an extra stitch?
Can anyone help me please? The wool was very expensive and this little problem is spoiling and otherwise gorgeous jumper. Thanks!

When you cast on you are knitting, so the yarn is already at the back so that when you turn to complete the purl side, the wool is already in front. I can't remember exactly what I do, but I I think I just knit as normal  right side when I get to the first stitch of the slit. Can anyone explain better?Huh I've just checked button holes which frequently use this tecnique and they are all nice and firm. Cheesy
