Before knitting forums came to my attention, I would dutifully finish each project before going on to the next.....no matter what!  Now, after reading how most knitters have several projects going, I have knitting bags, totes and baskets all over the place, including the car!

Ahhh but what do you mean you always finish all projects?  Cheesy Like everyone else here I have things on hand for times when I'm not doing a specific project.  Cheesy I mean that I I will prob finish a garment as leaving it means nasty lines across the work and my tension could change, Sad  but if it's using scrap yarns then I can have more than one project on hand where I'll crochet/knit a couple of squares when I have nothing much else to do or I need to watch something on TV and I can't knit at the same time.  Cheesy  That's usualy with Fair Isle, lace or other patterns. I have several garments to sew up as well as they are for the local show. Yep, they are not all in the same room cheesy  cheesy

I know what you mean! We just moved house and my plan was to make better use of the increased space by managing my projects better. No luck so far. I have a basket with everyday stuff in it by the couch, a big crate in the corner for my stash, three lovely big handsewn bags crammed with various projects and equipment, plus another big quilted bag in the spare room full of stuff I haven't yet identified.

Hubby says the house is overrun with my knitting stuff.

I really never used to be like this!

My question is then why have we become like this?  Is it because of  new technology.  Access to woolshops all over the world via internet? Credit cards can be used easily via a touch of a computer key.  Lack of self control on how much we spend on knitting related items suddenly doesn't matter. I believe all these things that have fueled our passion for the craft.
I don't know what attracts all of you to build a stash, but for me,  I love the colours and textures of the yarns (mainly the natural fibers) there is so much out there now that inspires me, where as before I only had my local yarn stores, mostly basic commercial yarns that I could find anyway, and now there is access to beautiful hand dyed yarns from across the world that can arrive at your doorstep within 7 working days! It's no longer a passion, it's my obsession.
Happy knitting everyone.

Hi Helen,

I have been knitting for years and yarn has always been my passion, but until the internet I was unaware of what beautiful yarns there were out there rolleyes

I used to buy the occasional Vogue Knitting magazine in the 80's and 90's and drool over the adds and patterns, not thinking for a minute that one day they would be in my reach.  They just were something to look at while I reached for my imported mohair or Patons Totem, which was about as good as it got at LYS during this time.

I had never heard of hand-dyed yarns, dyeing was for spinners who wanted to add some colour to their newly spun fleeces, or turn cream wool into another colour, that was it.  To put two or more colours into one skein of wool, that was simply unheard of.

How many ideas smiley  are found by browsing web sites and knitting blogs, a jumper design that you must have or a design like Clapotis that we all just had to knit, all of these things that before the internet didn't exist.  It is hard to imagine that there was a time that all we had was a trip to the LYS and come away so excited by our new purchase of a pattern and some yarn, probably a nice coloured crepe or some soft mohair and thought at the time that it was the best you could buy wink
